Bonnie-Jean Whitlock is a contemporary painter originally from rural Southeast Gippsland, she currently lives and works in Melbourne/Naarm. Working both intuitively and in response to personal narratives and photographs, her practice explores how we come to feel at home in our internal and external environments, and in our own bodies. Portraits of her partner, themes of queer intimacy and sexuality, internal landscapes, and psychedelic imagery repeat in her work, providing links between her personal life and universal themes of time, love, and unconscious states. Through methods of staining, tracing, and masking, she embeds layered images into porous fabric surfaces such as recycled bedsheets and pillowcases. This materiality is emphasised in her installations through using hand-made wooden brackets that hang the fabric away from the wall, or by stretching the thin fabric over repurposed frames. Bonnie is a recent Master of Fine Art graduate from RMIT University (2023) and a recipient of the Evan Lowenstein Arts Management Prize.
Opening Reception: 4th April, 6 - 8 pm.
